Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Winter is upon us and for some that means the “winter blues”. For others it may mean a more serious matter, Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD.

What is SAD?

SAD is episodes of depression that occur at certain times of the year, mainly winter due to the lack of light and lack of vitamin D.

Symptoms very from person to person but can consist of:

Changes in appetite; cravings for sweet starchy food

Weight Gain

Decreased energy

Fatigue

Tendency to oversleep

Difficulty concentrating

Irritability

Avoidance of social situations

Feelings of anxiety and despair

Exposure to UV light may help control SAD. The UV light exposure stimulates the brain and it responds by creating dopamine and serotonin, the feel good chemicals and vitamin D.

Maintaining proper vitamin D blood levels has been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), colds, flu, and other health conditions.
